PROJECT OVERVIEW

10 MW Microgrid | Georgetown, Texas

In June 2019, Spear Solar Solutions—now a strategic partner of PowerStack Microgrids—completed a 10 MW utility-connected microgrid for the City of Georgetown, Texas, marking a major step in the city’s effort to modernize its power infrastructure and expand renewable integration. Designed to operate in parallel with Georgetown Utility Systems (GUS), this project enhances both grid resilience and local energy autonomy, while aligning with Georgetown’s nationally recognized clean energy leadership.

The project was developed under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and qualified for production-based incentives through Austin Energy’s Performance-Based Incentive (PBI) program, reducing capital burden while maximizing long-term value for the city.

Strategic Value

Georgetown has long stood out as one of the first U.S. cities to power its municipal electric utility with 100% renewable energy through long-term wind and solar contracts. The addition of a distributed microgrid reinforces the city’s energy independence strategy while creating new operational flexibility during grid stress or pricing volatility.

This project supports Georgetown’s ability to:

  • Maintain low, stable energy rates for residents and businesses
  • Improve system resilience in the face of outages or peak demand events
  • Advance local sustainability goals with measurable, on-site generation
  • Leverage distributed assets as part of a broader energy planning strategy

PowerStack Value

As part of PowerStack’s project portfolio, this deployment showcases our ability to design and deliver large-scale, grid-integrated systems that meet the unique needs of public utilities. By combining performance-based financing, utility-aligned incentives, and reliable execution, we help forward-looking cities like Georgetown turn energy vision into operating reality.
